Joshua Mays was born in 1976 in Denver, Colorado. He is a muralist and illustrator. His art features black subjects in fantastical settings and is considered by many to be an example of Afrofuturism.

Joshua was to complete four murals in the Beacon series here in Oakland. He wanted to “contribut[e] . . . to the elaborate creative conversation . . . in the Bay Area.” He was hoping that locals and visitors to Oakland would be inspired by his work and continue to “explore the diverse collection of colors, textures, sights and sounds. . . .”

He studied illustration at Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design and graphic design at the Community College of Denver. His creations have been featured in Washington, DC, Denver, Portland, Philadelphia, Oakland, London, Johannesburg, Mexico City, and Jakarta.
